Breakin' It Down!
Bravo YKLS!!! Fabulous performance, great energy! Susanna and whoever who ran the production, congratulations!
I love the education behind the show. Great job YKLS. I hope more general public (and not only music lovers) came to the show, and looking forward to raising the music awareness among people here.
Thanks Yaw, Nilesh, Chong Yew, and Tian Kiat for making the band blended well with the choir. I dont feel the band was disturbing like the first time I heard, Thanks the shadow fingers master Cher Siang! LOL
Michael, you deserved the biggest compliment of the night. Every movement they made gave me spine-tingling excitement... my hair stood dude! I even curi curi took pictures with my cellphone.

The Flavour of Contemporary Ethnic Malaysian Music
Unity Through Music
Inner Voices heralds the beginning of a fresh new experience in the
movement of contemporary Malaysian Music.
Fifty years after achieving 1957, we observe the tremendous progress
and development achieved by Malaysia and Malaysians on a whole,
across a multitude of aspects in politics and economy. Uniquely,
Malaysia is well-known as one of the few countries worldwide that
boasts the success of multi-culture, ethnic and integration, with
communities living, laughing and prospering together. The core of
this success is built on an intricate blend of patience and
understanding which developed among the people after a long process
of assimilation over the years - from interracial marriages, fusion
of culinary experiences, educational exposure and even cross
celebration of religious events.
On the musical front however, harmonisation of what we will term as
the 'Malaysian Music' is still in its infant stage of evolution. It
is observed till today that various elements of local cultures and
its musical elements are by and large segregated individually to its
traditional cultural forms.
Inner Voices will bring the essence of the music combining four of
the main cultures present in Malaysia, bringing together Western and
traditional Malaysian instruments, to showcase and highlight the
beauty of harmonising of these elements, creating a fusion that will
possibly evolves into a whole new sound.
Let's Go Mamak will be a showcase of original compositions and
arrangements by local composer/arranger Ken Hor, and performed by a
stalwart group of local musicians specialising in various genres -
from Malay, Chinese, Indian to Western. The Musical collaboration
will be guided under the musical direction of a local saxophonist,
Julian Chan.
Let's Go Mamak features some of the most prominent names in Malaysian
Music Industry including New York-based saxophonist Julian Chan and
violinist Fung Chern Hwei, BOH Awards recipient Prakash on tabla,
Jimmy Ch'ng from Hands Percussion Team, sought-after jazz pianist Tay
Cher Siang, and the renown percussionist Kamrulbahri Hussin.

Life is beautiful
Almost fell asleep at mamak... cold wind woke me up, and whispered at my ears. She says,
"Life is beautiful because it's tough sometimes. Life is even more wonderful when u are enjoying every bit of it after the years of toughness."
Nah, just being corny.
The show is getting near, Julan is coming home soon, all stuff gotta be ready by hook or by crook... Very stressful, but I savour the process. The stress makes me feel that I am alive again, maybe for the first time since I got home.
The process is never easy... setting up the direction and finding the mutual thoughts, understanding the strength of each person in this mamak gang, writer block (again) and the "Oh F*ck I'm Screwed!" realization, some kinda lost and found where we let go Mr. "Timberlake" and got back our Mr Tay, spending long hours with the ethnic guys and experimenting, every bit of revealing the syncreatic voices in this society or simply the tone I'm trying to define mamak, cruelly deleted those unwanted stuff (and regretted most of the time, duh!)... never been easy dude. The way of living I am having now is definitely making my life short and moreover I don't get a cent out of it... But ya, I'm really savouring every moment to get there.
I'm recalling those days I spent long hours with homeless around westwood and santa monica, trying to find new ideas out of their life, meanwhile, digging some inner voices of myself... those days are tough, but invaluable. The moment my tears almost dropped when one of them came to the screening of a film I scored, priceless.
Why do I want my difficult life now? maybe for the sake of determining? maybe to prove something? That I'm not sure.
For the minute of having the pricelessness again, yes I wanna feel that again, in my own country.
BTW, saw this name somewhere online...
Du, Julan (杜巨瀾). Hey he's an assistant professor! Don't play play. LOL.

Pete Teo - Malaysian Artistes For Unity
Pete you are the man!
Not only low public awareness a problem in our community, the irresponsible media, the politics and psychic power, and now I see it myself - the ignorance within the industry itself...
An urgent situation to be fixed! Malaysian Artistes for Unity.
I won't point out who? but I am really curious what they think when they see this project on air.
I've been meeting great people since I got home. But those assholes I knew before I left KL in 2004, remain brainless.

有些爱人走了几步,到岸了;

"yo bro still alive arent you?"
"never better... duh! at least you are"
"fxxx 'm six feet under since last year, but my body's still coming to see yo man"
Gloomy Sunday
-_-|||

To STPM graduates who are contemplating studying music in government university:

Below is a brief description about music program offered by Universiti Putra Malaysia.
INTRODUCTION TO UPM MUSIC PROGRAM
Bachelor of Music Program (Music Performance) offered in Universiti Putra Malaysia, under the Faculty of Human Ecology, focuses on music performance, with a coherent and comprehensive content of Western Classical music tradition, but with also exposure to popular, jazz, commercial and traditional music. Performance is the core of the program where every student would have to have a major study instrument where individual instrumental lesson is the main component throughout the course which will lead to a Final Solo Recital for graduation at the last semester.
Besides, students will have to take an orchestral instrument as their second study instrument. Students will have performance experience and training in various combination including solo, chamber, choir and orchestra.
The program also provides a strong and concentrated support courses to enhance the performance skills, which is known as performance support courses. Performance support courses are divided into 1) theory and composition courses, 2) analysis and interpretation courses and 3) history courses. Beside all the performance and related courses mentioned above, UPM's music program also include a number of 4) academic courses in music that prepare students to pursue Master degree in music in various fields like performance studies, music education, music therapy, ethnomusicology.
THE STRENGTH OF THE DEPARTMENT
The department is known for its vigorous training on solo performance and orchestra training. Facilities in the department includes a Steinway 9 foot grand, two Kawai grand pianos, 12 upright pianos, full Orchestra percussions, three double bass, three bassoons, three horns, and other orchestral instruments.
Miss Yeoh Pei Sze (violinist), who is also an examiner for Trinity Guildhall, and Dr Loo Fung Chiat (pianist) are leading the classical performance studies in the department. Students majoring in jazz and commercial music are also increasing under the tutelage of Dr Chan Cheong Jan (pianist, composer) and Mr Arif Yusof Zain (saxophonist), and also with our adjunct professor Ooi Eau Jin.
