A Temp Track

Rambling on Jan 12 - Finally I replace the auto-play track with link to the song, 手紙 at my Silent Diary ...
手紙 - a Temp Track

The ‘temp track’, a temporary mock-up of a film's soundtrack, is assembled from pre-existing music prior to the real, commissioned score being composed. It is a "blueprint" for the film score

... alright it sounded like I copied from somewhere. I was my note I jotted down in film scoring class laaa... I already memorized it, like a piece of roti tisu!

This is what I keep listening to now... a temp track for the end credit of the film I'm working on now.
I don't understand Japanese, but it's definitely a charming song... I've been listening to it nonstop since an hour ago, I kinda hate it now. LOL.

When doing the song, I shouldn't listen to it anymore. You can only listen to it before you start doing it... It's just my rule.
And actualy it's true! If my itchy finger go click this song when I'm working on it.... hell, the outcome will sound like the original no matter how hard I try to get rid of it.

The song should play automatically and NONSTOP... so, get what I mean? I bet you wanna leave here, right now.

'm really working



Sorry for being disappeared on MSN or whatever messenger. I'm really working. If I don't finish this, I don't have a peaceful Christmas. Solving some technical error (my fault) of this cue. The director finally changed to a more compatible frame rate - 29.97 drop frame... but I was still working on 25 fps.... another disaster.

Alright, some little things went wrong. I totally forgot about the frame rate when I started working yesterday. When i realized this morning, it was too late. 
I already fixed these two scenes - Dream and Sex scenes. The last two scenes where Monica is leaving and he is alone were totally messed up. I still need time to fix them. 

James, again, sorry for my carelessness, and apologize if this delay causes any inconvenience.

OK.... showing off my embarrassment

OK, Now you can kacau me and laugh the hell out of me.
I went to snowboarding @ Mountain High. I think I got the trick quite fast, but not quite right. Most of time, I was just able to sustain on the board for 5 seconds, fell, got up, couldn't stay straight, and FELL, got up, skate few seconds, fell, got up... keep repeating all these actions about 10 times a trip down the hill and went throughly insane in this so-called "enjoying" learning process. Worse than baby learning walking I'm sure!
I would fall in 10 seconds for sure - either I fell out of control or I chose to fall to stop coz it went crazily fast or was going to crash into a tree or stuff.

THEN, I got COMA for more than 24 hours after I got home, then the next 24 hours I was a the deadpan stoneman... after another 24 hours my body still hurt like hell, duh!!!

OK... grouching now!!! When we were going to leave that place, and I saw an area, like a walkway, a flatter slope where was crammed many people in together, and people snowboard there. Then I asked my friends what's that place... they said that was for beginners. I.... can I use bad word? FARK!!!! They didn't bring me there, coz they said I would learn so much faster if I go for the higher one... learned from falling is the most efficient way and enjoying!!! F
So I won't be troublesome next time and they don't have to take care of me and I HAVE TO go up the peak with them, next time, which is next week or two weeks later, at another bigger and higher snowboarding mountain - Big BEar!!!!!!

Now wanna wallop someone to LEPAS KU PUNYA GERAM from the snowboarding, and being cheated.!!!!!

I took the cable car right outside the Big Pines Lodge to go up the hill. OK.... it's beginner trail.... but there are easier trails near the chilren's academy or another one right outside the Bullwheel Bar and Grill. My friends kept pushing me to go up the highest point of the West Resort. I couldn't even see the top.... and it's definitely NOT fun to roll down from that 70-degree slope. I SEE, this is the reason they brought me to the higher trail and wanted me to learning from falling, so that I could go with them. JERK!

I think the most emberrassing one was taking off at the terminal from the Cable car chair, or the lift chair. It never stopped for you to get down. I gotta take off to the "runaway" track with my left foot on the board. (the lift get close to the ground at the terminal but the lift doesn't stop). Why only one foot on the board. Because before you get up to the cable car, you gotta queue up and you technically can't move with your both feet on your board, unless you jump like kangaroo, and you are not allowed to get on to the lift chair if one of your foot is not on your board. So your gotta walk like a crab or a penguin depends on where you put your the other foot. I went up 4 times... maybe 5. I fell everytime when I took off at the terminal... every farking time. The 1st time I fell was an disaster. It just didn't come across my mind I was in the middle of the way, and would block anyone coming down. I just knew my right calf (the right feet was off the board) hit my snowboard and pained like hell, and people screamed "get away, go go...." too late... two people at the back of my lift fell on my both sides, awfully. They didn't hit me thou probably because they tried to avoid me... and another two people hit them from the back... I was in the middle going no way. My bad... :P
I'm sure the "lifeguard" lady... or the "snowguard" recognized me. She said "be careful" after the last time I fell. SO WHAT.... I am dumb!!

PS: Fark is Julian chan's term... A better term to avoid lecture from people like ExUPMer and whoever. Anyway, I think FARK works too. Thanks Julian. :D

How Smart Is Your Right Foot?

Some forwarded stuff to share with you guys. I would freak out if I do it fast, but still can do it.

This is so funny that it will boggle your mind (I kept laughing after I tried it 4 times....weird!!). And you will keep trying it at least 50 more times to see if you can outsmart your foot.

But you can't!!!

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles with it.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction!!!

I told you so... And there is nothing you can do about it.

Make sure you pass this on to your friends... They won't be able to do it either.

I went to the screening of the Perfume: the Story of a Murderer at Paramount Studio in Hollywood. 
Can't spend much time here, just jotting down some note for you guys. Check it out.
A decent film... but it can be much better. Still a good film I recommend. Great music, but not a master piece.

Alright, I'm a sluggish, I'm clumsy... Just I don't like writing my blog on iWeb (a supplement web tools that comes together with Mac computer) anymore... So, I spent one whole day 24 hours working on this, coming back to blogspot.

    I went to the screening yesterday in Hollywood. It’s just a mile away from the Ambassador Hotel, the place where Bobby was assassinated. RFK was great and he could be the best president in this country. The film itself isn’t excellent - don’t expect too much on the music too, but get ready to be surprised on watching a dozen of big movie stars. Demi Moore is old! Sharon Stone, hell, I don’t know for what hell sake she showed her winkles in Basic Instinct 2, but luckily Sharon is a real Sharon I saw here. Watching the legacy... it’s just heart-warming bitterness. Every word he said is still so powerful. OK STOP go watch.

    Digital Disaster

    I have to grouch about this...!!!

    I accidentally deleted a folder on Nov 12, Sunday. and I didn’t notice!!! Emptying my trash without double-checking... typical SAG!!!

    All my work in 3 weeks, 4 projects, all of a sudden, disappeared, evaporated!!!

    I think I deleted them in the morning. Then in the afternoon, I realized the folder I wanted to delete was still on my desktop.... WHAT THE HECK!!! It was like... magnified and seems SUPER BIG at that moment. FARK (Julian’s version of F*ck) !!!! “Then what did I deleted” I thought.

    Where is my “Latest Work” folder??!!! Hell, spending whole evening to call AppleCare (who cares about me since I didn’t pay for it), calling apple centers, looking for aids and the program that does data recovery. I finally got a program called File Salvage. Pretty cool, Got another program, Data Rescue... Both programs rescued my deleted data, not only those in the “Latest Work” folder, but ALL deleted data in these few months. No way to rescue only those files from “Latest Work” folder, and No way to trace the file deleted date. So, I got about 200 Logic files and few thousands of audio files in .wav, .mp3, . aiff, etc formats. No file names, All messed up!!!!

    I gotta open one by one to find those files back in the”Latest Work” folder. Spent like, let say, 24 hours, and I ended up sleeping only 2 hours. Woke up at 8am continue....

    Here I come, the most GERAM (Frustrating in Malay) was, FARK!!! those audio files that laid out on Logic Arrange Windows.... ALL MESSED UP!!!!
    The regions are still there, but they couldn’t recognize the right audio files. Hell !!!
    OK put them back, match them, 2 days 2 nights !!!

    Here and there some small tiny “data hunt”, another one day. On Thursday that week, NOV 16. I started my work as usual, on James Bathroom Film and Mo’s Album... 5 days just flew away because of a stupid click!!! FARK!!!

    

    Little Children


    I almost didn’t go this screening, because it was my birthday. Not really cool to spend my birthday in a theater... My only intention to go to this screening, Thomas Newman

    But indeed, Little children is a fabulous film. It is a surprise for me. Thomas Newman was there with the music editor Bill Bernstein. This is one of the film well demonstrates his composing techniques - IMPROVISATION!

    Some of the cues, he composed it to nothing, not to a score, no notation. Just some graphic draft, hand it to a group of musicians he has been working with for long time and trustable, and they just improvise. First time I heard about it when I just arrived in LA... I was like... WTF? That’s not composing Thomas.... But after watching his American Beauty, I thought it was excellent.

    It was the 1st time I heard Thomas Newman talked about his improvising composition. What he has in mind before improvising with musicians were
    - Time code, and all necessary changes or what we called spotting note from editor.
    - His tempo
    - His patterns, that can be used for repetition, or whatever purposes
    - The idea of direction
    .... I remember this few things he said.... but isn’t it terrific? I still don’t really agree with his method. But I asked myself after that, can I do it? if I do it is that the same fabulous sound? I can’t answer. Ok, then that is composition! I like Thomas Newman very much since American Beauty. Although he doesn’t seem put a lot of appreciation (should I say that? or he just forgot how he did it) of his past gigs in his mind, he really did a great job on this Little Children... he just move on and concentrate on the next film.

    This is master piece of his. I saw some ugliness of playing spontaneously, but there is something... something very organic that can’t be done with notation. He used his technique and confident to do it, outside the box but not too far as usual, and he successfully making a great balance between comedy and tragedy and perhaps some children element in there. I think it was a very excellent job!

    It is my dream to try what he’s been doing... maybe when I’m big enough to do it that way.

    I really like what he said especially when dealing with editor. He never tried to change the story, never tried to go against the spotting notes. and Thomas said, “I always stick with it, I don’t dare to change”. In order to survive in Hollywood, I think it is really important to know what you should do and what you shouldn’t and he is one of the best examples.

    Go surf online for the review of this film... it is surprising. The film itself is a good. And Thomas contributed a score to help strengthen the picture to bring about the musical vein of comedy-tragedy mood... not too much and not ignorable.

    This is a low budget short film and possibly an award-winning script, about 20-40 minutes in length. As long as you are interested and confident in meeting the requirements, we would love to meet you!!! We are devoted to creating art in the form of film and are planning to submit this film to festivals nationwide.     This is a story about love, trust, patience, and persistence between two young married couples.

    Basil Poledouris the composer of RoboCop

    Basil Poledouris (August 21, 1945 - November 8, 2006) was an American film composer.

    Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Basil Poledouris credited two influences with guiding him towards music: the first was composer Miklós Rózsa, the second was his Greek Orthodox heritage. Poledouris was raised in the church, and used to sit in services, enthralled with the choir's sound. At age 7 he began piano lessons, and eventually enrolled at the University of Southern California to study both film and music. Several short films to which he contributed still reside in the university's archives. At USC he met directors John Milius and Randal Kleiser, with both of whom the composer would later collaborate. In 1985, he scored Flesh & Blood for director Paul Verhoeven, again establishing another ongoing collaboration.

    Poledouris became renowned for his powerfully epic style of orchestral composition and his intricate thematic designs, and garnered attention for his scores to The Blue Lagoon (1980; director: Kleiser), Conan the Barbarian (1982; director: Milius), Conan the Destroyer (1984), Red Dawn (1984; director: Milius), RoboCop (1987; director: Verhoeven), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Free Willy (1993) and its sequels, Starship Troopers (1997; director: Verhoeven) and For Love of the Game (1999).

    Poledouris married his wife, Bobbie, in 1969 and had two daughters, Zoë and Alexis. The elder, Zoë Poledouris, is an actress as well as a film composer.

    He spent the last four years of his life living on Vashon Island, in Washington State, and died on November 8, 2006 in Los Angeles, California, aged 61, due to complications from cancer.

    Three recent Screenings

    I went to a few SCL screenings these 2 weeks - Happy Feet, Babel, The Queen. Sorry I’m not talking much about them, coz I should really go back to my work.

    Typical hollywood animation... great production thou, but not much surprise if I look at it professionally. Actually, who cares?? I know I’m going to enjoy the film and I truly enjoyed it and came out from the theater with mirth. Isn’t it more valuable?

    Penguins a cappella, tap dancing Mumble are simply too charming. ‘Mexican Penguins’ doing Mariachi? hell hilarious! Great music I have to say! John Powell, as usual, had done a stunning score. All vocal music were well arranged and performed! John Powell and the director Geroge Miller were there for Q and A session.

    Damn... a surprising american film for me!!! for many americans too I’m sure. Perhaps Babel is the best film I’ve watched in these 2 years in LA. How should I put it??? Crash, ya another Crash but much better than Crash.

    With 3 different stories happened in 3 different places, 3 different countries, 3 religions, 4 languages, 6 different families... but are somehow connected. I love the way the story is plotted. How Alejandro (or the writer) interlocked those relationships (or the crossover) between strangers, between cultures (it’s so far but at that moment they are close), between close family members (but it’s invisibly so far), etc... damn, he is as good as the real mother fucka!!
    Telling you stories - someone appears at the wrong place, a wrong person steps into another existing world, and an a story happens at the wrong time, and.... and just TELLING you stories, no conclusion, no hidden meaning, not intended to build any climax... just naked stories. How you wanna take it, your business. Crash is somehow still an american film, giving you a conclusion indirectly and somehow building the plot although the plot is not linear.

    Who should get the credit? Director Alejandro is a HUGE surprise. I haven’t heard his name before. (O... he directed 21 Grams!! But I am still surprised!) Script is good too. Music is good, going along with the stories so well, and not intended to build or dig any hole. However, the music is a little bit disappointing when it comes to the Morocco story. Gustavo used the right sound, and definitely the right instrumentation, but he should study Islamic music more. It sounds western played by different instruments, timbre etc... It’s not that bad, I agree, but Gustavo (Composer of Brokeback Mountain) can definitely play around with the sound far far away the box for the Morocco segment. Other than that, he did a tremendous job. I love all the stuff he created for the Japanese segment.
    Composer was there for the Q & A session after the screening.... but Alejandro wasn’t there. :(
    Not surprised if this is the best film of the year. I watched Prestige few weeks ago and gave some good comments. But Prestige seems so small compare to this. Shouldn’t say much. GO WATCH!

    O ya.... Brad Pitt is much better than Tom Cruise. Acting wise, maybe they are close technically. But in terms of CONTENT, Brad is way much better. Tom Cruise should come out with another film talking about his freaking scientology. How good is Scientology I don’t know, his scientology is just a freak.

    I have no comment! There is a purpose behind the film... and I slept through the 1st half. You can’t use a film to plead a monarchy. You either tell the truth, or don’t make the film. DIU.

    Anyway, the queen Helen Mirren is fabulous!!!! She is one of the only two reason why audience got in tears. The other reason is because of those reconstructed footage of the period after Diana’s death until the burial. I got my tears for that, and half of the audiences wept when the screen showed those footage.

    Charles is a jerk and he still a jerk. No tolerance for this!


    Perhaps, it’s true as what english critics said “NOT FOR FOREIGNERS”. The best film of the year? It’s maybe true but not outside the Great Britain.

    The composer Alexandre Desplat was there. Music was great I think, but sorry dude, you scored a wrong film... End!

    Looking forward to welcoming a film about Diana, uh??

    Finally I spent much longer time than I wanted to... I am really terrible.

    They all had their birthday this month. Today, Nov 13 is Weng’s 20th birthday, my youngest baby a.k.a. The Mirror :)

    I learned to appreciate this brotherhood only after I broke up with Mei Yen, my 2nd girlfriend and someone I thought I would spend my whole life with.
    It might be a bit late, but I’m glad I finally realize how important you are to me.
    I didn't know how to express my love especially during my high school... regret that I didn't spend much time with you guys when I was at home.

    Now after the breakup with Cheshire, I see things more clearly, more wisely, and promised myself I will always put my parents and brothers in 1st priority after I get home.

    Miss our old days especially when we played basketball together. Coz that's the time we do things together, the time we have the same goal. Although I am not as good, I really hope that we are always in the same team... for basketball, living, sharing, caring, etc.
    It doesn't really matter whether we win or not, but I enjoy the quality of the process and the renascent moment.

    Ok... This is my high school girl, Ai Ping. Charming huh? We were 17 that year. Unfortunately, we broke up few months later. It was a very pure puppy love.

    Foong’s Big Day & Grandma

    Simple and meaningful.
    Very touching when there are some pictures Foong facing our grandma’s shrine and said “I became a doctor, and now I’m getting...”

    Our grandma must be proud of us, especially Foong. There are engineers, lawyer, accountant, architect, musician (me! but don’t be a musician... musicians and homeless are buddies), and Foong is our only doctor... all of us are your lovely grandchildren that you can be proud of. All of us are holding at least a degree. All of us remember you urging us and our parents: You can be poor, but don’t let the education poor!

    We will pass your words to our children and offspring.

    I wrote a song in a summer dawn last year for my greatest grandma.

    I wrote this for a gig in LA, but it’s intentionally express my regret few years ago for not going back to my hometown one time when she was sick, because of some piddling little gig... and she passed away in a summer dawn, 4 years ago... I thought she would be fine and I promised to see her soon after my work, my stupid meaningless work.

    Hi xxx,

    i got very serious problem here. I accidentally deleted a folder this morning. The worst thing was I didn't check before I emptied the trash. I noticed that in the afternoon when I was about to work on your score... and I couldn't find the folder!!! including another 2 films that I recently scored and the album that I've been working on for the past 2 weeks. All my work in the recent 3 weeks, GONE!
    Cry...

    Anyway, I spent almost 100 for a Data Recovery software and have been spending my whole evening recover those deleted files. I almost got back all the files, including the LOGIC files that I did for the dreaming scene. Problem is I can't find the 2GB Quick time file that you gave me. I think it's too big for the "rescue trash", and permanently deleted.

    Is there anyway that I can get the Quicktime file, maybe from your partner?
    Please give me a ring once you get back. My carelessness really put me in deep shit.
    I already watched the film many times and I think I can make some rough draft at the meantime.

    HALLOWEEN AFTERMATH........

    So Halloween has come and gone.

    Had some happening time with Nori and Fumi. We went to Indian’s Oven, a restaurant near by my apartment. I brought too many business to them - ChernHwei, Doreen, my roommates (so many times!), Connie, and on Halloween Nori!!! One of the workers there even called me name. I forgot his name thou... Anyway, they serve real good indian food, even better than most of those I had back home.

    Sorry, no pictures to show. I think I should take some when I go there next time.

    Something really awesome. We passed by a corner house on the way walking to Indian’s Oven, and there was an open-house show, by the neighborhood (I supposed). They play little opera (haha I don’t know the term, Chern Hwei said Bangsawan, funny). They played american folk stories, bedtime stories, like our chinese opera. Many people, in fact families, were standing around the small little stage and enjoying. They seems like dressed up a lil to attend the “Bangsawan”, showing some respect! I looked like a homeless that day with my green sweater on.

    Felt warm in my heart to see people here still trying to maintain their cultures, and remind me about my homies back home... I’ve never seen Chinese Opera (DAI HEI) since long time ago. The last time I saw it was when I went to Penang. Many old things are fading... really sad! I can’t imagine what I can show my children in future. I don’t them to see everything online.... and accidentally click some porn links!

    Weeeellll, Halloween is their big day... and they really celebrate it hell out of them!! I had crazy halloween celebrations for the past 2 years, and I was a demon cow (actually not... a female cow with huge nippers). I didn’t join my friends this year. Doreen and Weiyann asked me to go to the Gay Parade, which is a big attraction in LA. I missed a big Malaysian party in Alhambra coz I didn’t get a ride.
    But I rather stayed at home, had some drinks with Nori, had a good sleep, then worked the next day.

    Meanwhile, we had some great chat during dinner. Some really sensitive topics popped up when we talked about cultures. Fumi and Nori are very interested about Malaysia, and don’t understand how our life look like there. I told them we have real indian food there, and Fumi questioned me “have you been to India? They must be different.” Got a bit harsh at one point...
    O hell, we Malaysians maintain our culture very well, somehow, still doing what our nenek moyang (ancestor) were doing. He just doesn’t understand how Malaysia was brought up by 3 main ethnic groups, and we are strongly holding our religions and cultures. At least we are still eating real Chinese, Malay, Indian food back home! China mainland people don’t have religion, Taiwanese are just too modern to do old folk stuff. Chinese in Thailand and Indonesian.... they can barely write their own name!

    Talking about China, Nori started venting... kept criticizing China lying about the NanJing assassination.. like China always lies about the amount killed. I got a bit harsh too! I don’t know how many exactly, I ain’t surprised at all if Chinese lie. Chinese are always big-mouth, no doubt! But does it mean Japanese didn’t kill a lot of people when they invaded mainland? Hell! I asked him if he saw those pictures, human stacked up like a hill, the way they killed babies, and what about the fucking crazy experiment of bacteria weapon on real human? FUCK!
    and I am not forgetting Japanese came to Malaysia before, and we heard lots of stuff from our parents, not magazine. When talking about NanJing, I see from the point of view of a Malaysia, a person out of China. I say no shit for China, But, I’m a living human and can’t accept the fact - not a murder case, not killing people parties.... it’s far more crazier than that, it’s an assassination of a nation, at the highest magnitude!

    We got a bit harsh, but not fighting at all... at one point he tried to change topic. Then I thought why are we doing this? I’m glad that I know such a great guy... who the hell cares what happened in past. We got out of the topic, and I glad we did.

    All in all, exactly had 3 huge bottles of Miller Draft, few cups of wine... No more left... Dudes lets gather again when I get my shit done, I’ll definitely drink you under the table, see who falls drunk first.

    Nori, is definitely one of the best friends I have in LA, and I definitely my pleasure! Friendship is far more important than those stupid history. Those stupid stuff our nenek moyang did... forget and move on!

    I’ve never met her. I didn’t like her when in the beginning because of her ignorance after Chern Hwei introduced us to each other. I was like... whatever... performance students are mostly haughty if they don’t know you or if they think you are not good. So, whateveeeer!

    Surprisingly, we still keep in touch and get to know each other more. She is actually a happy person, such a likable, extremely amusing chick!

    Prestige



    I watched Prestige yesterday. Scarlett is pretty. She is more than being sweet in the Lost in Translation....

    I like the story very much, the script especially. The plot was executed at the right tune, even it was non-linear. Christopher Nolan is brilliant I have to say. Damn, he did the screenplay script too, no wonder. Christopher and his brother Jonathan (?) and the script deserve the biggest credit, very innovative, perhaps a pioneer. The way he got out of the box, then created a great solution, then brought out another brilliant twist... are just phenomenon. The most important thing is the audience are still in his pace. No one is off course I suppose. If you think you are a great predictor, I bet you’ll love the ending.

    Hugh Jackson, too bossy and I don’t think like that. I would prefer him to stay obedient all the way for a greater “silent” payoff. Christian Bale is great. His wife in the movie, Sarah did a good job too. David Bowie is a surprise.

    O... music!!! Sorry, I don’t like it. Especially the big twist near the ending... Can you David Julyan please write as what the audience see? The music plays the inner heart and cushion too much under the dialogue... it’s just annoying. Maybe you scored well in other part and I believe you did, but your sound in the ending cue is still haunting me.

    ... It should get really hot in Oscar. No doubt for screenplay and maybe some luck in best directing.

    I'm done with Zombie!!! errr... no?



    The director, surprisingly, got some budget to bring the short to a studio. I will get at least a flute, and some brass, hopefully a sax. So, more work to do? Give me a few more bucks...

    Pretty interesting story, a new short film about zombie. I'm just doing an additional music, and not the main composer.
    A guy was dead in a car accident, came back home because he loves his girl friend too much. But he could only say I love you.
    He wasn't doing good. Vacuuming the garden, gas blower in the living room, use dishwasher as clothes dryer... he messed up the breakfast he prepared for girl friend. He was fuck-up.
    And worst thing was he always broke his own organ... hands, legs and even head always got chopped up.

    He started eating human for healthy organs - legs hands, and even penis, and last a brain so that he could have sex with her.
    He wanted to think and do more than I love you....

    No more story, can't tell everything...

    Another Short - Ready to go anytime



    I think this is fastest gig I’ve ever got.
    The director called this morning. Then I brought along my roommate’s laptop to meet him an hour later at the Coffee Bean on Westwood Blvd.

    I didn’t noticed the laptop wasn’t charged and the battery died away before the film ended. We then went to my apartment. Finished watching the film, gave him my opnion, especially for the last scene... How I would build up the music from a simple repetition, adding up elements, creating a small payoff (when the girl closes the door a.k.a. rejects the guy and being not tolerant) with the same repetitive stuff underneath softly and morphed after the door is completely closed. The repetition comes back but subtle at one cut, then lead to the end credit. Subsequently I showed him some similar scenes I did before in past, and also how I handled sequence scenes... He loves it and I got the gig. Pretty quick huh?

    Basically, it is about 2 couples, in a bathroom, a love story. The story is decent. Something which is cool about the scenario is the whole film was shot in the bathroom, some wide cuts from the bathroom or to the bathroom.

    The production quality is surprisingly excellent I have to say. Cinematography is good. Production sound is clear. Actress is... OMG damn pretty!!! Imagine, a slimmer Scarlett Johansson. My perfect angel, hell, even pretty than the real Scaelett!

    O... I just watched Prestige yesterday. Scarlett is pretty. Not just sweet like she was in the Lost in Translation.... I should talk about it in a new post.

    New Short Film

    - Directed by Giovanni Chen, a Malaysian director who studied film at Buffalo U. He is currently living in Los Angeles.
    - Amazing script, not surprising if this film win in any film festival. He is brilliant!
    - Will only start scoring in February when I get back to KL

    I screwed up too... sometimes

    This is one of the cues that I was well-prepared, but I screwed up a little. I used Shakuhachi in this cue, and I wrote about 2 tones higher than it should be. Unlike flute and clarinet, Shakuhachi is very strict to its range and timbre change. I noticed it’s like recorder, the highest pitch can be clearly distinguished... but too late, I noticed that in the studio.

    I already did some research, listened to some shakuhachi CDs, checked out the player that night and his past recordings (he recorded for the Last Samurai), made sure I understand the timber, especially the beautiful solo range... what can I say? A very big lesson - get 3 times more prepared than you should when you’re taking something serious. For me, once I take things seriously, I’ll get my ass kicked if I don’t make it...
    Perhaps, I’m not strong enough.

    I listened to Steve Mazzaro’s stuff. he is Doreen’s classmate. I felt I was hella small after listening his work. What have I done in LA? Ya, I did some gigs, regularly... but so what? I haven’t done something really big, written something I’m really proud of. I took too long to recover from the breakup. I often blamed the breakup swallowed up my inspiration. I didn’t try to tackle a higher destiny. After a year, I still haven’t got my 1st indie, not even the symphony score for NY... I’m still doing shorts and sometimes pop. Worst, getting gigs from KL... Well, hell yeah!

    2 more months, 3 more the most, How far can I go? We’ll see. I gotta show my cards on my table, no shit.

    The Mirror



    My youngest brother Weng. He’s just a photocopy of my face... Sometimes we would laugh at each other and say “why are you looking at mirror?”


    My mom sometimes called a wrong name and got response in rage, even got grouched by us the whole day... she deserved it! But now, I wish someone calls me Weng from behind.

    KFC - Don't pRay pRay






    Lazy recipe for Doreen, Chern Hwei, Justin, and all my buddies in overseas.

    damn lazy, but it really works.

    KFC chicKEN, even better! best in Westwood LA eeehhh, and somewhere in Queens, NY.
    Don't pRay pRay yeh!!

    Gotta be Chicken thighs dude. Don't try drumsticks, it will be like super dry goreng ayam.
    Defrost in the morning la.
    ***hit the surface with knife back, or massage it with fingers (or do that when you put salt and spice). haha
    ***Stab with fork, or shallow cut on the surface so that the flavor infiltrates into the meat.

    ***If lazy, skip it

    Apply salt first (about 1/4 to half tea spoon for each), then pepper (a lot). Massage a bit laaa.
    secret recipe - add Yoshinoya red pepper... go curi a lot everytime you go there :D
    Then flour that just enough to cover the surface, especially the skin!!
    Then throw them into a freeze beg or clean plastic beg... let them "marinate" for 1/2 hour to 2 hours... go do your work.

    Here is the trick - use aluminium foil to make high pillow to cushion the thighs.
    You need those oil to make the inner meat juicy (that's why thighs and not drumsticks) but also want them to be dry, and not soaking them in the oil and become oily wet... eeeewww!
    Make thick cylinders from foil and place 2 of them closely and parallel and put a row of thigh on it.
    (don't fold them nicely laa, the more uglier the thicker, "gulung" them roughly)

    440F, (250c) about 25 minutes, depending on your oven.
    take one out and test after 25 minutes.

    IF YOU ARE SUPER BUSY or LAZY!!! I tried this and it still taste really good.
    Throw thighs, salt, pepper and flour into a plastic bag. and hit them like those chinese robbers use linen beg to catch and wallop people. LOL


    PS: 100% guarantee you will like it and make it so often until your TJ hates it!!!! hahahha
    and make sure keep one for me next time.!!!!

    Kevin and I

    I hang out with Kevin yesterday, whole afternoon. He is still handsome, still very tall (There was once he almost knocked the lower ceiling in a practice room when he wanted to stand up to show me breathing. HAHA,!). We walked from Santa monica beach to Venice Beach... pretty crazy! then walked back to Santa monica, then to 3rd street. Whole aftenoon walking.

    We talked a lot. Talked about his life, my life and my job here, his job in MPO, our friends, and many things about music and some about MPO and Malaysia, and music in our society. He has been in MPO for 8 years, one of the first principals when MPO was founded. But I noticed, he isn't given much chance to to work outside MPO, (as well as contribute to our society, although he really wants to contribute more) because of his working permit and status, also the contract with MPO. Sigh... what a big lost if he leaves.

    He told me about MPO youth orchestra (I think there are few UPM students too), and he is happy about the progress and the arising standard. So sweet to hear that. He noticed the music scene is getting better in Malaysia, but sometimes disappointed especially there are not many audience attending their concerts, and when students aren't serious about playing or practicing.

    He played with PJ Catholic High recently. he was very impressed with the performance and the students there. Happy to hear that. Show him my music, show him my film, he was impressed too, and was amazed every time a new track was played. He was also surprised when he listened to GET IT by Chern Hwei and his string duo. Totally stunned! He is proud of us as a person living in Malaysia. He is happy to see what I am doing now, although he was disappointed when I stopped playing tombone few years ago. We talked a little bit Malay. Sometimes he talked to me in Manglish.

    I asked a lot of questions, some are questions I wanted to ask for long time. Asking about his music journey, what has him been through, how has he been practicing to achieve the level he is now at, and some personal stuff too. They were not easy to get through... I suppose I'm at the stage where he faced all kinda difficulties before he got an orchestral offer in south africa.

    I will write for him once I go home, I promise, and I will do my very best. He's a good person, that kinda person who I respect sincerely.

    Go to MPO, watch them, approach them, grab every chance that you can learn from them. They are the world-class musicians that you hear in overseas.

    Kevin Thompson, Trombone principal of Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra, was my trombone teacher back home in Malaysia.

    Or, Sorry... I am busy. (hey dudes, does it mean whoever who posted their opinions here have been free or jobless? I know some of us are busy, ME TOO, but I strongly believe MOST of us don't feel like saying anything)
    And it's always "true" that people like to say "I don't say shit doesn't mean I don't care."

    Anyway, great to see some little enthusiasm from some of us in the past 2 weeks... BUT
    Without reason, this forum cools down again.
    We always have brief period of enthusiasm.

    I am SURE there will be some people feel pissed after I say this.
    But sorry, this is really what I feel everytime I talk to Malaysians. and we are discussing some bad attitudes that we are actually carrying out.

    1st thanks to chan for the reply. I was expecting your feedback.
    Sorry for being rude, and I definitely apprehend the consequence of sending the last posting - Creating a huge pressure and tention among members. I always make sure I don't criticize people but the sin, and I am sorry if I did it, unconsciously.
    I hope you understand my intention of sending a sincere caution to all of us. Maybe not in a right way, but your reply well corrected me and set a good direction in this forum.

    Seniors are not perfect, I am not perfect for sure. I am still learning and still screwed up sometimes. There are much more room to improve, not limited to music, but also in my self cultivation, career direction, and even my language and communication techniques, etc...

    "I have written the message, but did not have the courage to press the send button" - I wrote the last posting, clicked send... deleted it after a while. and decided to rewrite and posted my thought after I realized I couldn't concentrate on my work. I open up myself. Do all of you?

    I am using bad english all the time. So, please don't hesitate to express because of your language ability. In fact, it should be a good chance to write your best english here, as well as start networking, learn to sneak into an on-going discussion, get yourself started.

    I am always proud of the achievement of our music department. I think UPM music department is STILL one of the best school in Malaysia, because of the involvement of Chan, and ALL other lecturers. I totally understand how hard the situation has been these few years especially after Chee Meng's batch. But I still encourage my friends to go to UPM, but with a promise to me of more hard work and serious concentration especially when having classes with our lecturers. I respect all our juniors who are still in UPM. I heard good comments from LAM and Arrif. I think you all (students) are the reason these good lecturers remain in this fading department. They can go somewhere else for better compensation.... whatever nice words, I sincerely thank to all our lecturers. I think you are tremendously notable perople. And you all are definitely a good mirror to all musicians in overseas, and encourage us to return to our country to contribute whatever we can. I believe Chee Meng, Chern Hwei, especially whoever who still keep in touch with UPM lecturers have the same thought.

    Don't feel shy... all of us were at the same beginning. How well we are in future, we still ought to go through all emberrassing learning proccess. Older people definitely don't laugh or look down at juniors. all of us were scolded hard by lecturers before. I am a famous example! Friends still laugh at me how I got scolded in past. In short, if you step back because you are shy (that applies to whatever personal emotion that stops you from expressing yourself)... then you must learn to open up yourself no matter what. Don't wait until it's too late, and difficult to change yourself especially when you have to find a job or pursue a career in this crazy world.

    Thanks Hui Sin for your active involvement. It's very encouraging. Still looking for more new juniors and please invite more members. And please don't limit this forum to UPM people and department topic. I think we shouldn't always address ourselves as UPM people (Although I always did), becuase it might stop other people step into this forum.

    FYI, I will not be as active as in the past for coming 2 weeks because of my work. But I am keeping track on this forum, and never lost track. If I can't "tahan", I will post a short buzz
